God’s purpose for our day-to-day lives doesn’t always seem crystal clear… does it?
You don’t always wake up out of bed, look at your calendar, and think, “Wow, God! This is easy! I know exactly what you want me to do today!”
If it were only that simple.
Instead, for many of us, our morning doesn’t look like that at all. We may not even think of God when we first wake up. Our heads become filled with all the tasks we need to accomplish.
Maybe, we have meetings for work or deadlines that are approaching too fast. Maybe, we are more focused on making our first cup of coffee – than on the Maker Himself.
It’s so easy to allow God to slip into the backdrop of our mind when the tides even out and the storm softens into peaceful, placid waters…but I would propose that it’s at these times when we need to be the most careful.
It’s times like these when we should be preparing for the next storm. We should be checking our boat for leaks. We should be checking the engine to make sure it doesn’t fail, and most importantly, we should be securing our anchor.
Your anchor – is Christ, but how do you make sure you are secured to Him? The answer in John 1:1-4, where it says:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.”
The Word is Christ. So, we secure our anchor daily by focusing our attention on His love letter to us: His word!
It’s okay to have a cup of coffee – but it’s important that reading His word and meditating on it is first in your heart. Finding your purpose is inextricably tied to seeking Him first, and to seek Him you must read the word – because He speaks to us THROUGH it!
While God can reveal your purpose in many ways, you have to do your part by staying anchored in Him. Here’s how you do that:
1) Pray that He will speak to you through His word and reveal whatever He has to set for you today.
You can do this in absolute faith because Jesus says, in Matthew 7:7-11:
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. “For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. “Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? “Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!”
2) Read His word EXPECTANTLY!
In Matthew 17:20b, Jesus said:
“For truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.”
3) Meditate on what you read, and find ways to apply it to your life. It is important to act upon the word for more than one reason.
Firstly, we use the word to become more like Christ by grafting His principles into our life (more of Him, and less of us).
Secondly, as Paul says in James 2:17,
“Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.”
4) Lastly, repeat this process every day.
Aim to reduce the time from the moment the morning light enters your eyes until you focus them onto the daily bread (His word).
Strive to wake up and say, “Good morning Jesus!” EVERY morning. This is how we hold fast to Him. Do you know what’s great about this whole process?
It matches perfectly with God’s primary commandments for us.
In Deuteronomy 11:22, Moses sums up all the law in just three parts, by saying, “For if you are careful to keep all this commandment which I am commanding you to do – to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and hold fast to Him,”
In other words:
- Seek Him…
- Obey and act on faith…
- …and never let go…
